Building Bench Strength: From Uganda to the United Kingdom

Beyond Uganda’s current matches in Mumbai, the agreement paves the way for Mumbai’s local players to travel to Uganda. This reciprocal arrangement allows MCA squads to play matches in Uganda during their domestic season or even during the off-season, offering diverse playing conditions and crucial match practice.

Naik elaborated on the strategic importance of this exposure, especially for players who are on the fringes of the senior state or national teams. While established stars have ample international exposure, Mumbai’s deep bench strength requires active competitive opportunities to develop. “The Uganda team can come and play matches here, and whenever MCA needs to go and play in that country during our season or even when we have our off-season,” Naik said. “The players who are playing for the senior team or even the Indian team, they have the exposure. But those who are in the second or third line — the bench strength of MCA — they need exposure.”

To further address this need for high-level exposure, Naik also revealed that the MCA is organizing an upcoming tour to the United Kingdom. Both the men’s and women’s teams from Mumbai are scheduled to travel to the UK this year, adding another layer of international development to the association’s robust calendar. “That’s the reason why we are (also) travelling to the UK this year, both men’s and women’s teams, and this is an additional opportunity,” Naik concluded.
