Kartik Sharma: The Rising Star of Chennai Super Kings
The Awakening of a Power-Hitter
Every IPL season brings with it the pressure of high-price auctions, and for 20-year-old Kartik Sharma, the weight of a INR 14.2 crore price tag was palpable during the opening stages of the 2026 season. As a marquee signing for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), expectations were sky-high. However, the path to success is rarely linear. After a stuttering start where he struggled to clear double digits in his first six innings, Sharma has undergone a remarkable transformation.
His recent form has been nothing short of a revelation, characterized by a sequence of scores—54*, 41*, 20, and a blistering 71—that has silenced critics and justified the faith placed in him by the CSK management. His latest exploits against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) served as a definitive statement, prompting former CSK stalwart Ambati Rayudu to label him a blossoming, complete middle-order batter.
From Domestic Promise to IPL Reality
Sharma’s reputation as a “turbo-charged” hitter was well-established long before his arrival in the IPL. Having trained with the CSK squad previously, he caught the eye during the Ranji Trophy for Rajasthan, where he topped the six-hitting charts. His T20 credentials were further cemented in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he famously struck 11 sixes in a mere 83 balls. Currently, he sits as the third-highest run-getter for CSK this season with 244 runs, trailing only the seasoned duo of Sanju Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Technical Maturity and Tactical Growth
What sets Sharma apart is not just his ability to clear the ropes, but his evolving technical repertoire. Ambati Rayudu, speaking on ESPNcricinfo TimeOut, highlighted the youngster’s preparedness for high-velocity short-pitched bowling, a common weakness for many young players entering the big stage. “I think it’s been exceptional. He was prepared for a lot of short bowling against a team that has good fast bowlers, that shows his preparation has been spot on,” Rayudu observed.
Beyond his physical strength, Sharma’s game against spin is showing signs of maturity. His ability to read the length of the delivery early has allowed him to dominate middle overs. During his 71-run cameo against LSG, he demonstrated an impressive ability to shift gears. Starting at 29 off 26 balls after the 12th over, he accelerated rapidly to reach his half-century in just nine more deliveries, including a signature shot over extra cover that showcased his ability to get to the pitch of the ball.
The Road Ahead: Refining the Craft
While his six-hitting ability—averaging a maximum every 12-13 balls—is elite, there remain areas for improvement. Sharma has played a high percentage of dot balls this season, standing at roughly 40%. The consensus among experts is that his strike rotation will inevitably sharpen as he gains more experience at the crease.
“His batsmanship will improve over time with confidence and experience,” Rayudu added. “He’ll know his single options or double options on a certain pitch. Once he starts getting into those nitty-gritties, I feel the strike rate also will improve.”
The transition from batting at positions No. 6 and No. 7—a notoriously difficult task for a young player—to his current role at No. 4 and No. 5 has been a catalyst for his growth. As he continues to learn on the job, the promise he displayed alongside fellow teammate Prashant Veer is finally translating into tangible performances. For the Chennai Super Kings, Kartik Sharma represents more than just a big-money investment; he is a rapidly developing talent who is quickly becoming the cornerstone of their middle order.
