A Clash of Expectations: The Sam Curran Controversy

The conclusion of the IPL 2026 season for the Rajasthan Royals has brought more than just disappointment on the field. Following their exit in Qualifier 2, head coach Kumar Sangakkara took the opportunity to address a contentious issue regarding the absence of all-rounder Sam Curran. The incident has reignited discussions regarding player availability, contractual integrity, and the enforcement of medical reports within the world’s most lucrative T20 league.

The Timeline of the Disagreement

Sam Curran, who had been a high-profile acquisition for the Rajasthan Royals, officially withdrew from the 2026 IPL season on March 19. At the time, the English cricketer cited a persistent groin injury, which he noted had been bothering him since the T20 World Cup. Curran expressed that the injury had shown ‘reasonable damage’ on medical scans, necessitating a period of rest and recovery to avoid further complications.

However, the narrative took a sharp turn on May 22, when Curran made his return to action for Surrey in the Vitality Blast. Despite not bowling, his immediate impact with the bat—scoring 141 runs across three innings—drew significant attention. This return, coming while the IPL was still in full swing, left Sangakkara visibly unsettled.

Sangakkara’s Perspective

‘We were told that Sam Curran had a season-ending injury, but I think I saw him playing for Surrey for two games or three games now. So that was disappointing,’ Sangakkara stated during the post-match press conference. The RR coach emphasized that his frustration stemmed not just from the loss of a key player, but from the lack of transparency regarding the recovery timeline.

For the Rajasthan Royals, the timing of Curran’s withdrawal had already created a domino effect. To compensate for his absence, the franchise brought in Dasun Shanaka. This move had its own repercussions, as Shanaka was forced to withdraw from a deal with the Lahore Qalandars in the PSL, resulting in him receiving a one-year ban from that tournament. The complexity of these roster changes underscores why franchises demand absolute clarity regarding injury status.

The Culture of Commitment

Beyond the technicality of the injury, Sangakkara highlighted the importance of team culture and presence. He drew comparisons to other players within the Royals squad who remained with the team despite limited game time. ‘We’ve also had players like Adam Milne, Shimron Hetmyer, and others who came here and practiced, carried water, and worked as hard as anyone else to support the team. It is really up to the individual player to decide whether they want to be present, but contractual obligations must be met,’ he added.

Refining BCCI Policy

The issue of overseas players withdrawing from the IPL has been a recurring concern for the BCCI. In September 2024, the governing body introduced a strict two-year ban for players who pull out of the tournament after being acquired in the auction without a verified, severe injury. Sangakkara voiced his support for these measures, suggesting that such policies are essential for the long-term health of the league.

‘A proper tight policy around that is always a requirement,’ the former Sri Lankan captain noted. ‘Injuries are a part of every sport, and we understand when they are genuine and season-ending. However, to ensure that the tournament remains credible and fair to all franchises, the BCCI’s strict stance on maintaining contractual obligations is the right way forward.’ Whether this incident leads to further scrutiny of medical reports or a tightening of player release protocols remains to be seen, but it has certainly highlighted the growing tension between international player welfare and franchise commitments in the modern game.
